A fence is the most important physical barrier of a pig farm
The most effective way to prevent the transmission of disease from wild boars to production facilities is proper and durable fencing. Finnish Animal Health ETT has defined precise criteria for what constitutes a reliable, wild boar-proof fence.
When you build or renovate your facility's fencing, it must meet the following requirements:
- Aidan type: Aidan must be a durable wire fence.
- Dimensions and strength: The height of the fence must be at least 1.7 meters. The mesh size of the net must be 50×50 mm and the wire thickness at least 2–3 mm.
- Foundation: To prevent wild boars from getting underneath, the bottom of the fence must be anchored to the ground every meter or buried in the ground to a depth of at least 20 centimeters.
- Ports and buildings: The wall without a door of an office building or warehouse can act as part of the fence. All gates must be kept strictly closed when they are not in use.
